On Thursday, March 29 2018, OCA Advisory Committee member Kevin Lone and myself presented to members of the Affordable Housing Management Association (AHMA) of Iowa on the Iowa Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA). The workshop was held in the FFA Enrichment Center on the campus of DMACC in Ankeny. A total of 52 AHMA members, comprised of property owners, landlords and custodians, were in attendance.
A PowerPoint presentation was used to present information on the OCA as well as selected mental health diagnoses AHMA members might encounter in their work. Brief definitions, common symptoms and behaviors were presented on depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia and borderline personality disorders. Along with the PowerPoint, resource folders were given to the audience. The folders included a list of OCA Advisory Committee Members with contact information, the OCA 2016-2017 Annual Report, NAMI signature program descriptions, a list of Iowa’s community mental health centers with contact information, a list of substance use and problem gambling treatment providers in Iowa with contact information, Mental Health First Aid information, a NAMI “Do’s and Don’ts” business card for communicating with someone in crisis who has a psychiatric illness, a list of mental health and disability services regional crisis line phone numbers and a mental health and crisis services directory for AHMA members to add their local service’s contact information.
The OCA relishes the opportunity to present information on what we do. If you know of a potential event or group that the OCA should have representation at, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 1-855-622-4692.
